Board Member At-Large
Natives in Tech

Position overview
Indigenous governance is about relational accountability: authority distributed through commitments that honor community, memory, and responsibility. Our systems should nourish coherence, not merely execute tasks. Board Members help ensure that organizational decisions reflect relationships over roles and long-view outcomes over short-term urgency.
A Board Member At-Large is a steward of governance, not a bystander. This role is about holding the system in relationship with the long view… caring for our people, our data, our mission, and our future in ways that resist short cycles imposed by external systems and timelines.
Authority and Purpose
This is a voting Board Director role. Board Members all share responsibility for guiding the organization’s direction over time, grounding decisions in mission, values, and the needs of Indigenous communities we serve. Decisions are made collectively with other Directors.
Core Responsibilities
Participate in Board Deliberations and Decisions
Engage in thoughtful discussion, review materials before meetings, and vote on matters impacting the organization’s mission and future.
Fiduciary and Strategic Stewardship
Bring awareness to how decisions align with our mission, long-term sustainability, and Indigenous values.
Advocate for planning and evaluation practices that protect memory and community continuity.
Help ensure that organizational systems, financial, data, partnerships, internal policies, reinforce community sovereignty rather than extract value or defer authority outside the people we serve.
Uphold the organization’s Bylaws, conflict of interest standards, and ethical obligations.
Support documentation of Board decisions in ways that future stewards can trust and build upon.
This is not a staff or operational position. Board Members At-Large do not direct day-to-day activities, supervise employees, or independently commit the organization without formal Board consensus.
Commitment
2-4 hours per week
Attend regular Board meetings and participate fully
Prepare in advance by reviewing Board materials
Serve through a 3-year term as defined in the Bylaws
Attend (in person, expenses paid) an annual Board Meeting some place awesome
A Board Member At-Large walks the path of governance that honors Indigenous Peoples, how central relationships are to how we succeed, centers community, is accountable to community and the other Board Members, and that builds the organization into what our community needs us to be.
